We recommend using Coupland Leather Balm within 12 months of opening for optimal freshness and performance. With proper storage, it MAY last longer.

Coupland Leather Balm is made with just two natural ingredients, beeswax and cold-pressed olive oil, free from synthetic preservatives. To ensure optimal texture, scent, and performance, we recommend using it within 12 months of opening. Over time, olive oil may oxidise and the balm’s consistency can shift, especially with temperature changes. While beeswax offers mild antimicrobial properties, freshness ensures the best care for your leather and the most authentic experience of the balm’s natural character.

Why the 12-Month Shelf Life Matters

  • Natural Ingredients, No Preservatives: Coupland Leather Balm contains only beeswax and olive oil, both natural, unrefined, and free from synthetic stabilisers. Over time, olive oil can oxidise, leading to a change in scent, texture, or effectiveness.

  • Consistency and Performance: As the balm ages, it may harden or separate slightly, especially if exposed to fluctuating temperatures. Using it within a year ensures the optimal balance of softness and spreadability.

  • Hygiene and Purity: Once opened, the balm is exposed to air, moisture, and potential contaminants from brushes or cloths. While beeswax has mild antimicrobial properties, it's still best to use the product while it's fresh.

  • Scent and Sensory Experience: The natural aroma of beeswax and olive oil is part of the balm’s charm. Over time, this can fade or shift, using it within 12 months preserves the full sensory experience.

What Happens After 12 Months?

We recommend using Coupland Leather Balm within 12 months of opening to enjoy it at its best. This guideline reflects our commitment to quality. The balm contains only beeswax and olive oil, natural ingredients known for their stability, but we haven’t conducted formal testing beyond the 12-month mark.

  • Still usable? If the balm’s texture, scent, and appearance remain unchanged, it may still perform well. Beeswax resists spoilage naturally, and olive oil oxidises slowly when stored with care.

  • Natural changes: Over time, you might notice subtle shifts, like firmer texture, mild separation, or a change in scent. These aren’t necessarily signs of spoilage, but they can affect how the balm feels or applies.

  • Storage tips: To help preserve the balm, keep it sealed tightly in a cool, dry place. Avoid heat and direct sunlight, which can accelerate natural oxidation.

  • Using it beyond 12 months: If you choose to use the balm after the 12-month point, we recommend testing it first on a small, hidden area of leather. As we cannot guarantee performance or condition beyond this timeframe, continued use is at your discretion.

While the balm may remain usable beyond this period, it has not been formally tested for long-term stability. Our guidance is based on how natural ingredients like beeswax and olive oil typically behave over time.
