How much balm should I use?
A little goes a long way. Coupland Leather Balm is rich and nourishing, so start with a small amount, especially on lighter leathers, and build up only if needed. Leather absorbs what it needs, and over-application isn’t necessary.
How often should I apply it?
That depends on your approach, and your leather’s story.
If you’re aiming to keep your leather looking fresh and flawless, regular touch-ups are key. That might mean smoothing out scuffs and marks as they happen, weekly or even daily. Coupland Leather Balm is compact enough to carry and simple to apply with just your fingertips, making it ideal for on-the-go care.
If you prefer the lived-in look, those creases, marks, and stories etched into the leather, you don’t need to polish them away. Instead, a once to twice a year treatment will replenish natural oils, reinforce the fibres, and keep your leather strong enough to carry on collecting character for years to come.
What’s the best strategy for leather care?
There’s no single answer. Whether you’re drawn to the clean lines of well-kept leather or the textured beauty of a well-travelled piece, Coupland Leather Balm is made to support your journey. You decide how often to treat your leather, we’re not here to set the rules, just to help your leather last through every chapter.
When should I avoid using Coupland Leather Balm?
Coupland Leather Balm is formulated for smooth, full-grain and vegetable-tanned leathers. It’s not suitable for nubuck or suede, which have a soft, velvety texture that can be darkened or flattened by oils and waxes. Applying balm to these materials may permanently alter their appearance.
If your item is made from nubuck or suede, we recommend using a dedicated brush or cleaner designed specifically for those finishes, something that lifts dirt without compromising the nap. If you’re unsure about your leather type, feel free to get in touch. We’re always happy to help.
Will Coupland Leather Balm darken leather?
Leather is a naturally porous material, and each piece responds differently to conditioning. When applied, the balm’s natural oils may cause a slight darkening, particularly on lighter tones. In most cases, this change is temporary, with the leather returning to its original colour once the balm has dried, typically within 24 hours.
We recommend testing the balm on a discreet area first to preview the result before full application.
Does Coupland Leather Balm make leather waterproof?
Coupland Leather Balm contains organic beeswax, which acts as a natural sealant. This helps to make leather water-resistant, meaning it can repel light moisture and brief contact with water. However, it does not make leather fully waterproof, so it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure or saturation.
If the leather does come into contact with water, gently wipe away any moisture using a clean, soft cloth, ensuring there’s no grit or sharp debris that could scratch the surface. Avoid allowing water to pool or soak in, as this may affect the leather’s finish over time.
Whether you treat your leather daily or once a year, Coupland Leather Balm is here to support your style, your story, and your sense of adventure. If you have further questions or need personalised advice, we’d love to hear from you.
