Chrome tanned leather is produced using a solution of chemicals, acids and salts to dye the hide. It's cheap, quick and mass produced, typically requiring little skill from the tanners. It is mainly used for making upholstery and garments such as jackets and chairs.
Vegetable tanned leather refers to the tannage, or method of tanning the cowhide into leather. It's called “vegetable” because of the natural materials used in the tanning process like tree bark. Since vegetable tanning is a natural process, it's also eco-friendly.
Veg tanned leather is a lot harder wearing and ages beautifully. Due to the natural qualities of the leather it develops a rich and beautiful patina which allows the leather to get nicer with age, compared to chrome tanned which deteriorates with age. If used and looked after, it doesn’t crack or dry out and offers that natural leather aroma.

Coupland Leather Balm
Leather is a naturally porous material, and each piece responds differently to conditioning. When applied, the balm’s natural oils may cause a slight darkening, particularly on lighter tones. In most cases, this change is temporary, with the leather returning to its original colour once the balm has dried, typically within 24 hours.
We recommend testing the balm on a discreet area first to preview the result before full application.
Coupland Leather Balm contains organic beeswax, which acts as a natural sealant. This helps to make leather water-resistant, meaning it can repel light moisture and brief contact with water. However, it does not make leather fully waterproof, so it’s best to avoid prolonged exposure or saturation.
If the leather does come into contact with water, gently wipe away any moisture using a clean, soft cloth, ensuring there’s no grit or sharp debris that could scratch the surface. Avoid allowing water to pool or soak in, as this may affect the leather’s finish over time.
Water-resistant means the leather can tolerate occasional splashes or damp conditions.
Waterproof, by contrast, implies complete protection against water ingress, which leather, by its nature, cannot achieve without synthetic coatings that compromise its breathability and character.
It’s easy to overapply, especially when working with a rich, nourishing balm like ours. You’ll find that a little goes a long way. If your leather feels sticky or tacky after treatment, it’s a sign that the surface has been saturated beyond what it can absorb.
This happens because one of our core ingredients, organic beeswax, doesn’t soak into the leather like oils do. Instead, it settles on top, forming a protective layer. When applied too generously, it can leave a waxy film or residue.
To correct this, simply buff the surface with a clean, soft cloth or a horsehair brush. This will lift the excess and leave the leather with a smooth, natural sheen. For future applications, start sparingly, you can always build up if needed.
Our recipe is no secret and we’re proud of it. Every batch of Coupland Leather Balm is handmade in Yorkshire using just two all-natural ingredients:
100% Yorkshire-sourced beeswax and cold-pressed olive oil.
The beeswax is gathered from hives across North Yorkshire, sourced through a local artisan who specialises in beeswax products and honey. Their craft not only ensures the purity of our wax, but also supports the region’s rural economy and the wider artisan community.
The olive oil is carefully selected for its quality and cold-pressed to preserve its natural richness. Together, these ingredients give our balm its signature golden hue and its nourishing, breathable finish.
No synthetics. No fillers. Just honest materials, thoughtfully combined to care for your leather, and to honour the hands and landscapes that made them.
Why These Ingredients?
We use just two ingredients in Coupland Leather Balm, and each one earns its place.
Yorkshire-Sourced Beeswax
Beeswax is a time-honoured protector of leather. Naturally water-resistant, it forms a breathable barrier that helps shield leather from moisture, dirt, and abrasion. It’s especially valuable for outdoor gear and boots, where exposure to the elements is common.
- It enhances leather’s natural lustre without clogging pores
- Helps prevent cracking and brittleness caused by damp or dry conditions
- Aids in burnishing edges and preserving stitching integrity
Our beeswax is sourced from hives across North Yorkshire, through a local artisan who specialises in beeswax and honey. This not only ensures purity and traceability, it also supports the region’s rural economy and craft community.
Cold-Pressed Olive Oil
Cold-pressed olive oil is rich in antioxidants and vitamins, making it a gentle, natural conditioner for leather. Unlike refined oils, cold-pressed retains its full nutrient profile, helping to replenish lost oils and maintain suppleness.
- Moisturises and softens dry leather fibres
- Helps reduce the appearance of scuffs and surface scratches
- Preserves flexibility and prevents cracking over time
We choose cold-pressed olive oil for its purity and performance. It’s bought in from trusted sources and blended in small batches to ensure consistency and care.
Together, these ingredients give Coupland Leather Balm its signature golden hue, and its quiet effectiveness. No synthetics. No fillers. Just honest materials, thoughtfully combined.
Start by ensuring your leather item is clean and completely dry. Then follow these steps for best results:
- Patch Test First
Apply a small amount of balm to a hidden area to preview how the leather will respond, especially important for lighter shades, which may darken slightly as they absorb the natural oils. - Use Sparingly
A little goes a long way. Leather is porous and will begin absorbing the balm immediately. Starting with a small amount helps minimise any darkening. - Apply Evenly
Use a soft cloth or our dauber brush to massage the balm into the surface of the leather. - Let It Dry
Most of the balm will absorb into the leather. However, beeswax, one of the key ingredients, remains on the surface and should be gently buffed with a horsehair brush or clean cloth. This seals the wax and adds a layer of protection against the elements. - Reapply as Needed
Use the balm periodically to restore, protect, and extend the life of your favourite leather goods.
Just a small amount. The balm is rich and effective, leather absorbs what it needs, and a little goes a long way. Start sparingly, especially on lighter tones, and build up only if needed.
If you’re aiming to keep your leather goods looking fresh and flawless, regular touch-ups are key. That might mean smoothing out scuffs and marks as they happen, whether it’s once a week or whenever life leaves a trace. Coupland Leather Balm is designed for convenience: compact enough to carry, simple enough to apply with just your fingertips. And the best part? A little goes a long way.
Definitely. If you love the lived-in look, those creases, marks, and stories etched into the leather, you don’t need to polish them away. Instead, a once-a-year treatment with Coupland Leather Balm will replenish the natural oils, reinforce the fibres, and keep your leather strong enough to carry on collecting character for years to come.
It’s your call. Whether you’re drawn to the clean lines of well-kept leather or the textured beauty of a well-travelled piece, Coupland Leather Balm is made to support your journey. How often you apply it depends on your personal style and how you want your leather to age. We’re not here to set the rules, just to help your leather last through every chapter.
Coupland Leather Balm is designed for smooth, vegetable-tanned and full-grain leathers, but it’s not suitable for every type of finish. If your item is made from nubuck or suede, skip the balm. These materials have a soft, velvety texture that’s easily darkened or flattened by oils and waxes. Applying balm can alter their appearance permanently.
For nubuck and suede, we recommend using a dedicated brush or cleaner designed specifically for those finishes, something that lifts dirt without compromising the nap. If you’re ever unsure, feel free to reach out. We’re happy to help you choose the right care for your leather.
Coupland Leather Balm is made with just two natural ingredients, beeswax and cold-pressed olive oil, free from synthetic preservatives. To ensure optimal texture, scent, and performance, we recommend using it within 12 months of opening. Over time, olive oil may oxidise and the balm’s consistency can shift, especially with temperature changes. While beeswax offers mild antimicrobial properties, freshness ensures the best care for your leather and the most authentic experience of the balm’s natural character.
