How to Care for Vegetable-Tanned Leather: A Gentle Ritual

Vegetable-tanned leather is more than a material, it’s a living canvas that tells a story over time. At Coupland Leather, we choose it for its depth, durability, and ability to age gracefully. But like any heirloom, it needs care. Here’s how to keep your vegetable-tanned leather supple, rich, and ready for the years ahead.

1. Clean Gently, Not Aggressively

Use a soft, dry cloth to remove surface dust. For deeper cleaning, dampen the cloth slightly with water, never soak the leather. Avoid harsh soaps or alcohol-based products, which strip natural oils.

2. Condition with Purpose

Apply a small amount of Coupland Leather Balm using circular motions. Let it absorb, then buff lightly. Our balm’s beeswax and cold-pressed olive oil nourish without clogging pores or leaving residue.

3. Store Thoughtfully

Keep leather out of direct sunlight and away from radiators. For best storage, store in breathable cotton bags, not plastic, to prevent moisture build-up.

4. Avoid Over-conditioning

Leather needs balance. Conditioning every 3–6 months is ideal, depending on use and climate. Over-conditioning can lead to saturation and darkening.

5. Embrace the Patina

Scratches, scuffs, and colour shifts are part of the journey. Vegetable-tanned leather evolves with you, each mark a memory, not a flaw.

Whether it’s a wallet, journal, or pair of boots, caring for vegetable-tanned leather is a quiet ritual of respect. And with the right balm, it becomes a celebration of longevity and craft.
