How to Clean Suede and Nubuck (Without Ruining the Finish)

Suede and nubuck are two of the most tactile, characterful leathers in the world, but they’re also among the most misunderstood when it comes to care. Their velvety nap and matte finish make them a favourite for boots, bags, and jackets, yet they require a very different approach to cleaning than smooth vegetable-tanned leather.

If you’ve ever wondered how to clean suede or nubuck without flattening the texture or darkening the surface, this guide is for you.

First, Know Your Nap

Suede is made from the underside of the hide, giving it a soft, fuzzy surface. Nubuck, on the other hand, is top-grain leather that’s been finely sanded to achieve a similar texture, but with slightly more durability.

Both are porous, absorbent, and prone to staining. But unlike full-grain leather, they don’t respond well to oils, waxes, or balms. That means traditional leather conditioners, like our Coupland Leather Balm, aren’t suitable for suede or nubuck. More on that later.

Step-by-Step: Cleaning Suede and Nubuck

  1. Dry Brush First Use a suede brush or crepe rubber to lift dirt and restore the nap. Always brush in one direction to avoid matting.

  2. Spot Clean with Care For small stains, use a suede eraser or a clean cloth dampened with white vinegar. Gently dab, never rub.

  3. Steam for Stubborn Marks Hover the item over steam (from a kettle, for example) to loosen embedded dirt. Then brush again to lift the fibres.

  4. Let It Breathe Avoid over-saturating. Suede and nubuck need to dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.

  5. Protect the Finish Once clean, apply a suede protector spray to guard against future stains. Choose one that’s silicone-free for better breathability.

IMPORTANT: Do all of this with care, and test in small areas first. Do not go all in and accidently ruin your piece. Test your time and be gentle.

Where Coupland Leather Balm Fits In

While our balm isn’t designed for suede or nubuck, it plays a vital role in holistic leather care. Many bags, boots, and accessories combine suede panels with smooth vegetable-tanned leather. In these cases, Coupland Leather Balm is ideal for conditioning the non-suede sections, preserving their richness, flexibility, and longevity.

By caring for each material appropriately, you honour the craftsmanship of the piece and extend its life beautifully.
