5 Common Mistakes in Leather Conditioning & How to Avoid Them
Leather care should be simple, but even seasoned owners can slip into habits that do more harm than good. Here are five common missteps we see, and how to keep your leather looking its best.
Mistake 1: Using Petroleum-Based Products
These can clog pores, attract dust, and degrade natural fibres. Instead, opt for plant-based balms like ours, made with beeswax and cold-pressed olive oil.
Mistake 2: Over-conditioning
Too much balm can saturate the leather, causing dark spots or a sticky finish. Apply sparingly and only when the leather feels dry or stiff.

Mistake 3: Skipping the Patch Test
Always test balm on a hidden area first, especially with lighter leathers. Natural ingredients can deepen colour slightly, which may be desirable but should never be a surprise.
Mistake 4: Conditioning Dirty Leather
Applying balm over dust or grime traps particles in the surface. Always clean gently before conditioning.
Mistake 5: Ignoring Climate
Leather reacts to humidity and temperature. In damp conditions, store with silica gel or in breathable bags. In dry climates, condition more frequently.
Leather is resilient, but it thrives with mindful care. Avoid these pitfalls, and your pieces will reward you with decades of beauty and use.
